Well there is not a lot of difference between print design and web design; almost all the elements are same. Both the print designer and the web designer approach to the solution with a same mindset. The colors used are the same in both the design techniques. But problem is the failure to understand the difference between these two approaches. They are not 100% same. While developing solutions there is some difference. The difference is of stability and permanence, when you print design, the design is permanent and stable. You cannot change the print design. But this is not the case with the web design. If you design a web page, it will change its appearance on deploying on it on different browsers. It also depends on the operating system you are using to view it.
Many web designers are of the print background, it is an expert’s comment. Many of the experts think the same. If you are a customer and web designer gives you a print out of your websites design then it will not be acceptable. A print design is not comparable with the web design. The [print out provided to you will not be the same, as the look of the web page will change depending on the browsers and the operating system used. Designers that are experts agree that print outs are not representation of your skills.
Let us take an example, a customer comes to you he has a printed page in his hand; it is his website design with a lot of graphics on it, animations and texts. Most of the customers are not aware of the things like page load speed, download speed and many other factors. So in order to keep the customer happy you have to do it.
The requirements change every now and then. You might be using a different browser to test the design and the customer will check the design on some other browser. So a good thing is to test your design on different platforms before the customer sees it. On what thing will your site be viewed? If you have a print design in your hand it will not be good enough to describe the uses. Will the website be viewed on an iPhone, a laptop or a desktop computer? So it all comes that the web design is not accurate as the print design, you have to tell your customer the difference between a print design and the real web design.
